                        Abstract
                        An increasing large number of tasks are delegated to computer systems in which software and hardware interact: think of autopilots in modern planes, autonomous cars, medical devices, etc. However, these systems are typically built by humans and are therefore subject to human errors, not only in terms of "software bugs", but also in terms of design mistakes. In this talk I will present some approaches that help in the construction of more robust systems, presenting some of my work in the area, and connecting it to the CS curriculum.
                    
                                
                                    
                        Speaker Biography
                        Franco is Professor of Computer Science at the Gran Sasso Science Institute, L'Aquila, Italy. Previously, he was a Professor at Middlesex University and Head of Department. From 2018 to 2023 he collaborated with the Prime Video Automated Reasoning Group as an Amazon Scholar. In his research, Franco applies logic-based methods to the formal verification of complex and critical systems, often in collaboration with industrial partners and research centres. He was at Middlesex University from 2009 to 2023 and he helped develop the material for the First Year of Computer Science, in addition to teaching the third year module "Testing and Verification". Before joining Middlesex University, Franco obtained his PhD from UCL and he held research positions at Imperial, King's College London, UCL.                         Abstract
                        I am a graduate from Middlesex University, with a first class degree in Computer Science (BSc with placement at Nomura, a Japanese Investment Bank). I then went on to have a full time position at Nomura, working on credit risk IT. Now I am currently also an MSc Financial Maths student. In this presentation I will talk about the application process I went through for applying for the placement: cv, application questions and interviews. Then the focus will be on how it is to work in a corporate environment, what are the advantages and disadvantages of being part of an industrial placement programme at Nomura and how a usual week looks like. Finally I will present a few conclusions I made so far from this experience.
                    
                                
                                    
                        Speaker Biography
                        Cristina Tincu is a graduate Computer Science student, after being a Software Developer intern for 15 months at Nomura, a Japanese Investment Bank. She worked in credit Risk IT, developing and maintaining software solutions that calculate market and credit risk exposures. The internship was part of her year in industry module at Middlesex (BSc in Computer Science). Cristina is originally from the Republic of Moldova, where she graduated from the Informatics course at the Financial Banking College of Chisinau before moving to London.
