Dr Carlisle George (Covenor of the ALERT Research Group) was a speaker (invited by the British Embassy in Vietnam) at the “UK-ASEAN Workshop on Partnership in Health Smart Technologies powered by Artificial Intelligence” in Hanoi (Vietnam). His talk was titled “Non-medical devices: Consensus on standards and legal liability” and focused on legal issues (e.g. data protection, professional liability, product safety compliance, AI specific regulatory frameworks) related to health technologies and artificial intelligence, especially those that are not classified as medical devices according to the regulatory requirements of the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency).
The workshop took place over a two-day period (24th & 25th March 2025) and was attended by other participants from the UK (MHRA, NHS, Royal Holloway, Imperial College. Kings College, Portsmouth, Edinburgh Napier, Loughborough, Surrey) and from the ASEAN countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Lao, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam). After the workshop Dr George was also invited to attend two days of the UK-Southeast Asia Tech week (27 & 28th March 2025) in Ho Chi Minh City (former Saigon), where the British Government brought 12 AI companies to discuss areas of mutual interest and cooperation in AI technologies between the UK and ASEAN countries.
